View of deafness and its cure by the deaf community

View of deafness and its cure by the deaf community

The deaf community feels like they still do not have the same level of hearing ability as hearing people, even with the most advanced hearing aids, cochlear implants, and other technological advancements. Even if they have hearing aids or cochlear implants, deaf people will always need captions and interpreters to communicate effectively. Hearing aids and cochlear implants are regarded favourably by individuals who possess functional hearing. There are an excessive number of hearing parents who have children who are deaf.

Hearing individuals frequently experience feelings of exasperation when they learn that deaf individuals who make use of hearing aids or cochlear implants are still unable to “hear.” Hearing people continue to have trouble accepting the idea that deaf people will always be unable to hear. Hearing individuals frequently feel frustrated and resentful toward deaf individuals.

Unlike many hearing people, deaf people prefer to believe what they perceive over time. Because deaf people have such a robust feeling of self-acceptance, they do not concur with the audist notion that they should “wake up.” The so-called “gift” that was meant to be given to them is actually full of harmful sounds that stop them from growing and reaching their full potential.

Why hearing aids are generally unpopular among those who are hard of hearing.

Some deaf people were opposed to the idea that their hearing-impaired friends could benefit from using cochlear implants. In the grand scheme of things, they constituted a relatively insignificant portion of the entire. It would appear that cochlear implants cause them to be afraid. Some people are under the impression that babies are murdered shortly after birth through a brain implant. The remainder would like to make use of signs. There is a possibility that deaf people who get cochlear implants will not understand the need for them to learn Sign Language. Most deaf people who have never been interested in signing languages have never made much of an effort to become proficient in them.

Most people point out that having a hearing impairment qualifies as a disability. It can occur either during pregnancy or later in life. I’m not saying it’s bad. It indicates that either one’s ears aren’t functioning properly or the other person’s are, depending on the context. If a problem arises, I believe that you should do everything it takes to resolve it. Some people who stopped using hearing aids said that they were very uncomfortable, so they might have gotten cochlear implants instead of keeping their hearing aids.

It may seem like many deaf people are afraid of or even against cochlear implants (CIs) because of fear. No one understands. Regarding cochlear implants, some individuals have misconceptions that are not founded in reality. This is because they view CI’s success as a danger to their own. At this point to get your hearing tested, just book a hearing test, so  you can choose to get a hearing aid or not for yourself or your child.

According to the deaf culture, is there a treatment for hearing loss?

It is critical to understand why hearing aids are useful for people who have difficulty hearing, severe or mild hearing loss, or are deaf (profound loss). Damage to the nerves that is not repaired is a problem. Others believe that the ear needs to be operated on, but unfortunately, the nerves that have been damaged cannot be repaired. It doesn’t help society as a whole to try to find a cure for deafness.

Hearing aids and cochlear implants can improve a deaf person’s ability to hear, but they do not make it simpler for a deaf person to comprehend how sounds are constructed. The most effective option is sign language since it makes it less difficult for people to communicate with one another. Even though one can speak, one might be dependent on sign language to fill in the gaps. Being deaf is not a limitation; rather, it is a unique ability. Instead of learning how to communicate with and assist deaf people, many people have the misconception that being deaf is a negative trait.

Is a cure for deafness deaf genocide?

There is more than one factor that might contribute to hearing impairments. Hearing impairment can be caused by a variety of factors. It’s possible to injure your ears, or you might have been born with a condition. There is a possibility that the brain has difficulty comprehending noises. A person is said to have functional deafness if they have normal hearing but are unable to make use of what they hear because they struggle to process what they are hearing.

To restore hearing to an individual who was born without the ability to hear, it would be necessary to construct a new ear and auditory brain. Nothing even somewhat similar to this will ever occur. There will always be a problem with our hearing. The deaf community has its own unique culture and language. It is common for hearing children to learn sign language if they have deaf parents. Make use of translators, close friends, and members of your family. Some hearing people feel like they are part of the deaf community since they share the same language and culture as deaf people.

It would be a form of cultural genocide to promote a cure for deafness by force and make it illegal for people, especially young people, to use sign language. This would disproportionately affect the Deaf community. After all, the act of killing people is only one aspect of genocide. It is sometimes carried out by enrolling children in schools located in foreign countries, as was the case with many indigenous peoples. There is a significant issue facing the Deaf community regarding the lack of instruction of sign language for youngsters, whether they are hearing or deaf.

The term “curing” deafness in modern times typically refers to the process of developing new hearing aids, such as sound amplifiers and cochlear implants. Hearing aids are available to people with hearing loss, thus the deaf population is not excluded. Even if they wear hearing aids to communicate, children who are not fluent in sign language cannot be considered true members of the Deaf community. They would experience a sense of alienation from the Deaf community if they were forced to utilise spoken language when they were brought up using sign language. People who have an aversion to those who use hearing aids frequently make it difficult for those individuals to sign petitions.

Even though hearing aids are marketed as a treatment for deafness, there are some hearing parents of deaf children who refuse to teach their children sign language because they view it as a sign of unsuccessful “therapy.” There is no danger when the devices are marketed as hearing aids for the deaf. The problem is that people think it’s better to be able to hear and speak than to be deaf and use sign language to talk.
